Connect ChatGPT to ioTORQ EMIS

Connect ChatGPT to your ioTORQ EMIS to ask questions about your energy data, targets, alerts, and other supported EMIS information directly from ChatGPT.

The ioTORQ EMIS connection is read-only. ChatGPT can retrieve supported EMIS data, but it cannot use this connection to modify or delete that data.

Before you start

Before users can connect their EMIS accounts, an owner or admin of your organization's ChatGPT workspace must add ioTORQ EMIS.

Each user connects using their own EMIS account and can only access the EMIS information they are already authorized to view.

For owners/admins: Add ioTORQ EMIS to ChatGPT

If you manage your organization's ChatGPT workspace, add ioTORQ EMIS once so that users can connect using their individual EMIS accounts.

What you'll need

You'll need your organization's EMIS address. Take the address you normally use to access EMIS and add /mcp to the end.

For example: https://yourcompany.iotorq.com/mcp

1. Enable Developer mode

In ChatGPT:

  1. Open Settings.

  2. Select Plugins.

  3. Select Developer mode.

  4. Switch Developer mode on.

Why does ChatGPT require Developer mode?

Developer mode allows an owner or admin to add a custom connection such as ioTORQ EMIS.

Turning on Developer mode does not, by itself, give ChatGPT access to EMIS accounts or data. Each user connects and authorizes their own EMIS account separately.

2. Add ioTORQ EMIS

Go to:

Settings → Plugins → Browse plugins. Select the + button to add a plugin.

Complete the New Plugin form:

  • Name: ioTORQ EMIS

  • Connection : Enter your organization's EMIS MCP server URL, for example: https://yourcompany.iotorq.com/mcp

  • Authentication -> Select OAuth.

Review the information shown by ChatGPT, select I understand and want to continue

Select Create

About the "Elevated risk" warning

ChatGPT may display an Elevated risk warning when Developer mode is enabled or when you add a custom MCP server.

This is a general warning that ChatGPT displays for custom connections. It is not specific to ioTORQ EMIS.

3. Sign in to ioTORQ EMIS

You will be redirected to ioTORQ EMIS. Sign in using the credentials you normally use to access EMIS.

Your credentials are entered directly into EMIS; ChatGPT does not receive your password.

4. Allow access

Review the requested access and select Allow.

The connection provides read-only access to supported EMIS information, including:

  • Variable configuration and settings

  • Variable telemetry data

  • Targets and target values

  • Alerts

ChatGPT cannot modify this data through the ioTORQ EMIS connection.

5. Confirm the connection

After authorization, you'll be returned to ChatGPT. Confirm that ioTORQ EMIS appears in your workspace.

ioTORQ EMIS is now available for users in your organization to connect with their own EMIS accounts.

Each user must still connect using their own EMIS account. Users can only access information that their individual EMIS account is authorized to view.

For users: Connect your EMIS account

Once an owner or admin has added ioTORQ EMIS to your organization's ChatGPT workspace, you can connect your individual EMIS account.

1. Find ioTORQ EMIS

In ChatGPT:

  1. Open Settings.

  2. Select Plugins.

  3. Select Browse plugins.

  4. Find ioTORQ EMIS and install it.

2. Sign in to ioTORQ EMIS

When prompted, sign in using the credentials you normally use to access EMIS.

Your credentials are entered directly into EMIS; ChatGPT does not receive your password.

3. Allow access

Review the requested access and select Allow.

The connection provides read-only access to supported EMIS information, including:

  • Your identity and email address

  • Variable configuration and settings

  • Variable telemetry data

  • Targets and target values

  • Alerts

ChatGPT cannot modify this data through the ioTORQ EMIS connection.

You're connected

You can now use ChatGPT with ioTORQ EMIS.

ChatGPT can only access the EMIS information that your individual EMIS account is permitted to view. Connecting ChatGPT does not give you any additional permissions in EMIS.

Verify your connection

When you want to use ioTORQ EMIS in a conversation:

  1. Start or open a conversation in ChatGPT.

  2. Select the + button next to the message box.

  3. Select ioTORQ EMIS.

After selecting ioTORQ EMIS in your conversation, ask:

Which sites can you see in ioTORQ EMIS?

ChatGPT should return the sites your EMIS account has permission to access.

If it does, your connection is working and you're ready to start asking questions about your EMIS data.

Disconnect ioTORQ EMIS

To remove the connection:

  1. Open Settings.

  2. Select Plugins.

  3. Open or locate ioTORQ EMIS.

  4. Remove or disconnect the connection.

ChatGPT's access to your EMIS account stops when the connection is removed.

Disconnecting ChatGPT does not change or delete anything in EMIS.

Troubleshooting

ChatGPT doesn't seem to be using ioTORQ EMIS

Make sure ioTORQ EMIS is selected from the + menu for the conversation you're using. Having the connection configured does not automatically enable it in every conversation.

I can't find ioTORQ EMIS

If ioTORQ EMIS isn't available in your company-managed ChatGPT workspace, it may not have been added yet.

Ask your ChatGPT owner or admin to follow For owners/admins: Add ioTORQ EMIS to ChatGPT above.
